The Institute of European History awards doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships for research stays in Mainz. The IEG also welcomes international researchers as fellows in residence with external funding, e.g. by the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation or the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

The research fellowship programme of the IEG combines research, training and international networking. Fellows can pursue their individual research projects in an inspiring atmosphere. They discuss problems and methods of European historical research in an interdisciplinary and international surrounding. According to their special fields and interests, they are invited to participate in the academic activities of the Institute. In cooperation with its international partners, the Institute supports the exchange of fellows to embed them in a network of European historical research.

The successful candidate is expected to be involved into a research at the crossroad of the Random Matrix Theory, Quantum Chaotic Systems, and the Theory of Integrable Hierarchies.

MOVE is the Swiss interdisciplinary network for mobility studies, linking the universities of Neuchâtel (leading house), Berne, Lausanne, and Zürich. In addition to having created the Swiss Chair for Mobility Studies (a visiting professorship), MOVE offers four grants for post-doctoral studies on topics related to the mobility of persons, ideas, goods and institutions. Three post-doc research fellows have already been appointed and are working on issues related to the mobility of migrants (Bern), health practices (Zürich), and urban forms (Neuchâtel). The candidate who will be awarded the grant offered in the present call will be based at the University of Lausanne to conduct research on the mobility of higher education programmes and institutions, also called transnational or cross-border education.

The position starts in autumn/winter 2009-2010 (no later than January 2010).

At the Chair of Sensor and Actuator Systems within the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at TU Berlin semiconductor and CMOS-based sensors are developed for biomedical purposes together with academic and industrial partners from material sciences, bio physics, bio chemistry, and medicine within the framework of interdisciplinary cooperative projects. In this context a number of openings are available as Research Assistant with Teaching Responsibility (Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin / Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter) and / or PhD Student within the Framework of Funding Projects (Doktorandin / Doktorand im Rahmen von Drittmittelprojekten) The opportunity to work towards a PhD degree is supported in all cases. School of Applied Sciences PhD studentship: The geomorphic impact of rock-avalanche deposits in mountain landscapes


We are seeking to attract an enthusiastic person with skills in physical geography, earth sciences and/or skills in physical modelling. A willingness and ability to conduct independent laboratory and potentially field-based work in mountainous regions will be key to the success of the project. This project will be an interdisciplinary undertaking and it is unlikely that any applicant will have a full skills set. Hence, a flexible outlook and willingness to learn new skills is essential and we will provide full training in the skills required to complete the PhD.

Postdoctoral positions are available in the laboratory of Dr. Christophe Ribelayga, Ph.D. in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Research in the lab is focused on circadian rhythms and neuronal plasticity and directed at elucidating the retinal cell types and mechanisms critical for circadian organization of retinal function (for instance, see Ribelayga et al., Neuron, 2008).

Winona State University offers two scholarships to international students. The scholarships are described as follows:

A graduate assistantship is available for 2 years (twice renewable). Research will be carried out in the area of computational modeling of tissue engineering and bone fracture healing (including the influence of mechanical loading and the modeling of blood vessels).

The ideal candidate has a strong interest in biomedical processes and an affinity for computer modeling. The candidate should be an eager self-starter who is able to work with, and be part of, a multidisciplinary (biomechanics and systems biology) research team. The candidate is expected to collaborate in the organization of the courses and practica according to her/his skills and the need of the department (about 120 h/year).
